A broad coalition opposes the citywide questions placed on the ballot by Mayor Eric Adams’s charter revision commission, saying they weaken City Council power.

“In the midst of a five-count federal indictment, Mayor Adams is rushing to ask New Yorkers at the ballot for more power and less oversight.”

Civil rights and community advocates, alongside some local lawmakers, highlighted questions two through six, which will appear on the back of ballots in New York City this November.

Mayor Adams has been loyal to longtime aides despite growing calls for them to resign. It is a trait he has shown through his career.

Advocates say the “manipulative” measure is indicative of a “rushed” and “undemocratic” City Charter revision process pushed by City Hall, in which only a handful of people testified in favor of the idea.

The mayor’s undemocratic sham of a charter revision commission bears little resemblance to the truly democratic and transparent charter revision process I was part of in the 1980s.
